BASHO: A Japanese poet. Matsuo Basho
(1644-1694) is considered to have been the
greatest master of the seventeen-syllable
form of haiku. Originally from the area
surrounding KYOTO, he began to study haiku
when, as a child, he was companion to the son
of a local lord. After the death of his friend he
spent several years living in a Buddhist
temple in Kyoto, where he studied
literature and calligraphy. He then moved to
EDO, where he lived as a recluse on the
outskirts of the city and continued to
write poetry. The most important influences
on Basho's poetry were his Zen Buddhist
upbringing and his four journeys through
the countryside of JAPAN, which he described
in his poetry. Basho died in OSAKA on the last
of his journeys. (See also Japan article).
